Montavilla Jazz Festival premieres a two-day new music extravaganza Saturday and Sunday August 16 and 17. Thirteen Portland-based jazz groups and their very original music are featured in this continuous exploration of the new frontiers of improvisation. Post5 Theatre at Milepost 5, 850 NE 81st Ave. is the hostspace for these performances.
Saturday’s fest is headlined by Blue Cranes, Sunday by David Friesen’s Circle 3 Trio with Greg Goebel and Charlie Doggett. Other performers include George Colligan’s Theoretical Planets; Tim Willcox’s Superjazzers; Portland Jazz Composers’ Ensemble Core Sextet with Darrell Grant; Alan Jones and the Cavemen; Ryan Meagher; the Rich Halley 4; Trio Flux; Kerry Politzer Group; Thomas Barber’s Spiral Road; Optic Nerve Trio; and the Blake Lyman Quintet.
Fest hours are 2 pm-11 pm Saturday and 2 pm-9:30 pm Sunday. Doors open at 1 pm and tickets are $10–25 sliding scale for a one-day pass, available at the door. Seating is limited so come early. For a complete schedule, the website is www.montavillajazzfest.com.
