Neighborhood Notes Buckman May 16

Susan Lindsay

Meeting on proposed new homeless shelter in residential Buckman Tuesday, May 3, 7 to 8:30 pm, Mayor Charlie Hales will attend a meeting specifically for neighbors and local businesses regarding his proposal to open a new homeless shelter on the Washington High property in residential Buckman. A representative from the Portland School District, owner of the property being considered, will be in attendance.

The Mayor first proposed this shelter at his “State of the City” address to the City Club in March. His office has conducted negotiations on the use of the property with the school district, but to date there have been specific proposals presented nor no public meetings held to area neighbors, residents or businesses. The meeting will be held in the Multnomah County Board Room, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd.

While no agenda for the meeting has yet been presented, it is anticipated this will be an opportunity for the neighborhood to receive specific information about the proposal, including scope and management plan, and for attendees to provide feedback and get answers to questions. Please inform your neighbors and encourage attendance. It is unknown if there will be any other meetings.

The regularly scheduled Buckman Community Association meetings are May 12 (Board and General) and May 19 (Land Use). Meetings begin at 7 pm with the Board meeting at 6:20 pm. May meeting agendas so far will be: May 12 the proposed new homeless shelter at Washington High, parking committee report, and May 19, a new restaurant coming to Washington High, new development planned for 26th and SE Ankeny St. At the Board meeting on May 12, a full discussion of standing rules for the BCA taking positions and writing letters will take place with a look to vote on any bylaw amendments in June.

For a copy of the proposed rules, email buckmanboard@googllegroups.com. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this discussion.

Elections are coming June 9. Serving on the BCA Board (a 2 year stint) is interesting and fun and a service to your neighborhood. We’re a group that socializes too. Join us after our meetings in the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne Blvd.
