The Udmurts by David Zellnik is at Back Door Theater 4321 SE Hawthorne Blvd. inside Common Grounds Coffee.
Presented by Defunkt Theatre, the story explores how we find home and hope in a collapsing world. It’s the story of Nate, middle-class Florida kid with fundamentalist parents. He becomes friends with Mrs. Huff, an older, once-glamorous actress, living in exile from a place called Udmurtia (the Upper Volga of Russia).
Mrs. Huff’s tiny Queens apartment holds secrets from her vanishing culture. Then Nate meets Clem, a uber-wealthy Manhattan who promises him a way out of poverty and his devotion to Mrs. Huff is tested.
Defunkt’s production is the world premiere.Thursdays – Sundays, May 13 – June 18 at 7:30 pm. Sliding Scale $15- $25 Fridays and Saturdays. Reservations are encouraged as space is limited. defunktheatre.com/503 974 4938.
