The drive – or walk from the Hawthorne Bridge to the Mt Tabor volcano offers opportunities to notice new businesses and appreciate the old ones. Fish Emergency Services is now Mainspring; Teascape and Brick and Mortar Barbershop are where Yarn Garden used to be and Karuna Contemplative Living draws in those who meditate.

Bee Thinking gives you all the help you need to raise bees and offers mead in its shop near SE 17th. West of SE 23rd, Bombay Cricket Club, Hot Lips Pizza, Jam on Hawthorne and Grand Central Bakery are all great places to get specialty foods for your culinary enjoyment.

Moving up the Boulevard, we pass Friendly Smiles Dental Group and Rivermark Credit Union. The new signage at Holman’s Funeral and Cremation Service (founded in 1854) reminds us of the historic status of the 1902 home.

Belmont Eco Laundry – Hawthorne and Claudia’s Sports Pub at 30th are examples of the contrast. Claudia’s has been around for over 30 years and Belmont Eco Laundry opened last December. Next door to Claudia’s to the east is the new construction where Spring Market used to be. We are all wondering what businesses will be there next.

Enough touring for today; we will continue our journey next month.

Amazing that it is nearly November. Our businesses are readying themselves for Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday, in addition to the December 2016 Holidays.

The Hawthorne District will again publish the Holiday Gift Guide and hold the 2nd Annual Tree Lighting at The Fernie Brae on Saturday December 3 at 5:30 pm.

Thank you to the Sponsors of this article: Hawthorne Vision Center and Rivermark Community Credit Union and the District’s 2016 Member Benefactors Fred Meyer and New Seasons Market.
