Defunkt’s On the Edge: two sides of American history

On the Edge: Trifles by Susan Glaspell and Dutchman by Amiri Baraka, two tales directed by Sarah Armitage are presented by Defunkt Theatre  February 10- March 18 At The Back Door Theater, 4321 SE Hawthorne Blvd. (enter through the Common Grounds Coffeeshop).

Both plays are seminal texts and explorations of oppression. Trifles focuses was first performed in 1916 at a time when female playwrights were unheard of. Baraka’s Dutchman premiered in 1964, focusing specifically on a white woman who targets a black man. Together they explore the cycle of oppression in America and how members often act out their own trauma history on other vulnerable individuals and populations.

Presented Thursdays – Sundays at 7:30 pm. Pay-what-you-can Thursdays and Sundays, sliding scale $15- $25, Fridays and Saturdays. Reservations encouraged as space is limited. Tickets: see / 503.974. 4938.

The evening contains adult themes and language and is recommended for mature high school students and adults.
