The Portland chapter of Soldier Songs and Voices is part of a national group whose mission is to provide Veterans with free music lessons and songwriting workshops. SSV is an all-volunteer non-profit organization established by a group of local musicians and based on successful model programs in Texas, Colorado, and Idaho.
Weekly workshops meet for two hours, usually in 8 week terms and are designed to help build and explore self-expression through songwriting. There are a limited number of guitars available for participant use and basic instruction is provided in a group setting. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to share songs during the workshop and at occasional informal performances.
Veterans can join the workshop at any time in the term. held weekly Sunday afternoons at TaborSpace’s ArtSpace in SE Portland from 2 to 4 pm.
