CREACIÓN DEL PERSONAJE – Acting techniques workshop; 8-sessions over 2-week with Nelda Reyes, for aspiring and experienced actors. Mon-Thurs. Aug. 4 – 15, 6 to 9 pm. PORTLAND OPEN STUDIOS AT MUSE ART AND DESIGN, 4220 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Every Saturday and Sunday this month participating artists work as the public observes between noon and 5 pm as a preview of Portland Open Studios. An exhibit of work by twenty-five POS artists throughout the month opens Friday, August 8, 6 to 8:30 pm. The annual tour of 96 artists’ studios is October 11-12 and 18-19. Muse is open daily from 11 am to 6 pm. On view through August 31.


THE CRUCIBLE, Arthur Miller’s classic Salem witch trials tale,  is presented for one night by Anonymous Theatre and Theatre Vertigo August 18, 7 pm at Portland Center Stage at The Armory, 128 NW 11th Ave. Auditions are held and the identity of the cast is kept secret from the cast itself who do not know the identities of their fellow actors and do not reveal their participation in the project to anyone. The house lights dim, the play begins and each actor delivers their first lines from the audience. Cast members discover one another’s identity in front of a live audience. Directed by Paul Angelo, tickets are $25.


BOBBY JO VALENTINE appears in concert at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 17405 NE Glisan St. Sat., Aug. 9, at 3 pm. Valentine has received numerous recognitions for his work, including Songwriter of the Year by the West Coast Songwriter’s Association, and television spots on ABC’s Morning Blend, The concert is suitable for all ages. 17th WILLIAM BYRD FESTIVAL – This nineteen day festival features choral works by Renaissance composer Byrd (1540-1623) and his teacher, Thomas Tallis (1505-1585). The music begins Friday, Aug. 8, 7:30 pm, with a selection of English cathedral anthems from four generations of teachers and students. The final concert is Sunday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 pm. Both are in St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, 1112 SE 41st Ave. A complete festival schedule includes an organ recital, seven liturgical services, and six public lectures. PLAYWRIGHT’S WORKSHOP – A four week supportive environment with writing exercises, prompts, discussion and feedback to strengthen structure, dialogue, character development and plot. It’s a free-wheeling fun way to get stories ready for the stage. Debbie Lamedman is facilitator, instructor, author and editor of eight acting books. MEDICAREFULLY FABULOUS – Wendy Westerwelle’s one woman show – original stories about aging, faith, friendships, politics, sex, facial hair, no sex drive, being Jewish, life in her mid-60’s (“the last part before I drop dead”) and food.
