Portland CMG (Creative Music Guild) welcomes the Matthew Shipp Trio for an intimate performance Wednesday December 6 at Michelle’s Pianos.
A versatile, articulate pianist, Shipp’s current ensemble features seasoned and propulsive veterans drummer Newman Taylor Baker and bassist Michael Bisio.
Since his arrival in New York City in the 80s, Shipp has recorded dozens of albums as bandleader and as support for Art Ensemble of Chicago co-founder Roscoe Mitchell as well as his frequent partners, saxophonist Ivo Perelman and the late David S. Ware. Listen in at matthewshipp.com.
Local treasure David Ornette Cherry opens the show. The multi-instrumentalist and son of trumpeter Don Cherry refers to his music as a “mosaic of sound” incorporating influences from world music, free improvisation, and the history of jazz.
Doors open at 7 pm, and the music goes on at 8 pm. Michelle’s Pianos is at 600 SE Stark St. 503.295.1180. Tickets are $12 – $20 sliding scale. Visit creativemusicguild.org to find out about other New Music concerts around town.
