The Portland Police Bureau and the Portland Bureau of Transportation are encouraging Portlanders to register their bikes in order to make returning stolen and recovered bikes to their owners easier. Currently less than one percent of bikes are registered and bikes can’t be returned if the owner is unknown.
The registration process requires the bike’s serial number, manufacturer and model, frame and accent colors, photographs of the bike and your current email address and phone number. On many pedal bikes, the serial number is stamped into the frame underneath the bottom bracket, near where the pedal cranks connect to the bike. If available, purchase information is also requested.

In addition to registering your bike, the site offers steps to take to promote bike security, including always using a high-quality U-lock, chain lock or folding lock positioned low on the frame. Always lock your bike up and never rely on a cable lock as your bike’s primary security.
Additionally, if possible, keep bikes inside residences as garages, sheds and bike security rooms are frequently targeted by thieves. E-bike users should also remove the battery when it is being stored or locked.
If your bike is stolen, you’ll need to file a police report, even if your bike is registered. Filing a report helps police identify recovered property, document bicycle theft and investigate patterns of activity.
