Buckman Community Association

Last month, thanks to the stupendous help from our dedicated Board, community volunteers and via the generosity of our sponsors, both business and individual, the Buckman Community Association held two large, all inclusive, all free community events. The Buckman Movie in the Park was held August 1, followed by the Buckman Picnic August 2. Both were extremely well attended, fun and a joy to produce! Huge gratitude to our donors and volunteers…the Buckman Picnic Team!
The SlimJims, an excellent five piece band playing tons of favorites, closed out the picnic which had featured Flamenco music, a bouncy house, face painting, games, free drinks/snacks/ice cream and six adorable baby goats! You’ll find a complete list of sponsors on our website and special thanks to Community Bridges Inc., Coca Cola and Councilor Tiffany Koyama-Lane.
You can still help support these events now and their continuation in the future by making a fully tax-deductible donation on our “Give Lively” link on our website, buckmanpdx.org. All monies contributed go towards this and next years’s efforts to continue to bring these fun, positive and free events to the greater community and especially kids.
Our next regular BCA monthly meeting, held every second Thursday 7-9 pm at Imago Dei (1302 SE Ankeny St.), will be September 10. We hope to host a candidate forum for those running for the important position of Multnomah County Chair. In October we will have contenders for City Council District 3 in a candidate forum at the same location. HAND

August for the Hosford-Abernethy Neighborhood Association Board has traditionally been a month off from taking action and focusing on specific concerns. No difference this year. The Board, which in the spring doubled in size, used the time to get to know one another better and discuss general concerns as well as ideas for the future.
Early, after a quick organizational effort with others in the community, we threw a summer party at a newly stubbed Caruthers St. and are continuing work to improve the section. Recently, we have officially engaged in a couple of situations, two being Ross Island and the possible location of a bottle/can drop on SE Milwaukie Ave., and we are moving ahead on how to join discussions on the ongoing train/commuter snarl.
Next up we’re looking forward to hearing the Division-Clinton Business District’s plans for the future.
Meetings are open to everyone who lives, works and owns businesses in HAND; we meet 10 months out of the year on the St. Philip Neri campus, second Tuesdays at 7 pm.
Laurelhurst Neighborhood Association

Mark your calendars: Thursday, September 24, LNA is hosting a District 3 Candidate Forum, 6:30-8 pm at the Laurelhurst Club. Rather than a debate or stage event, we’re doing a rotating table format, so neighbors get real, one-on-one conversations with candidates instead of rehearsed speeches. We have six candidates confirmed for the event and expect a good turn out. This is a great chance to meet the people running to represent us on City Council before you vote this November. The event is free and open to all but space is limited so please register at bit.ly/46ndhu2.
Mt. Tabor Neighborhood Association

“Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability,” an author and theologian once opined, but this summer the MTNA is keeping busy. During our August meeting we heard updates from our land use chair regarding several developments currently underway in our neighborhood: the old Dairy Queen site on SE Division St.; an RFP for the old Mills Open Air School site on SE 60th Ave. and SE Stark St.; logistics around redeveloping the empty lot opposite Coquine on SE 69th Ave. and SE Belmont St.; and placement of 5G infrastructure along E Burnside St. Our neighborhood history project, older adults outreach with AARP and park accessibility work with Tabor for All are continuing smoothly. We’re also proceeding thoughtfully into the preliminary design phase for community banners to be hung at select streets and intersections. Similar to other neighborhoods around town, we hope these create an even more cohesive neighborhood feel while letting people know we take pride living here together.

North Tabor Neighborhood Association

North Tabor is excited to bring back the Fernside Flea for its second year! Join your Tabor neighbors Saturday, September 26, 1–5 pm at Leikam Brewing for an afternoon of vintage finds, handmade goods, craft brews and good company. It’s a fun, low-key event for and by neighbors, and we’d love to see even more of our neighbors come out this year. We’re also partnering with Mt. Tabor Neighborhood Association on a District 3 City Council Candidate Forum, tentatively planned for Tuesday, October 13 at Mt. Tabor Middle School. With the upcoming election for District 3 City Council seats, we’re looking forward to giving neighbors a chance to hear directly from the people running for office. We’ll be collecting questions from the community ahead of time and putting those questions to the candidates at the forum. And, of course, there will be pizza! Richmond Neighborhood Association

The Richmond Neighborhood Association held its Ice Cream Social August 10 in Sewallcrest Park. This served as the association’s August meeting and will hopefully become an annual event.
Meetings are otherwise held at Central Christian Church, 1844 SE Cesar Chavez Blvd. the second Monday of the month 7-9 pm, except January. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate. People can participate via Zoom; the link to register is on the agenda, posted to richmondpdx.org and the RNA’s listserv. Meetings are recorded and posted to the website. The Sewallcrest Park Ice Cream Social was well attended by about 75 people. District 3 City Councilor Steve Novick was there, as well as a staff person from the office of Councilor Tiffany Koyama Lane. No official business occurred. Board members introduced themselves, Chair Debby Hochhalter read the RNA’s Mission and people socialized while enjoying various flavors of ice cream. Hawthorne Fred Meyer and US Chef Store provided donations for the event.

South Tabor Neighborhood Association

This summer, STNA has focused on attracting new members by spreading the word about who we are and what we do.
Building on the success of last year’s free yard tree giveaway, we’re reaching out to neighbors once again. With hotter summers, it’s imperative that we fill in and grow South Tabor’s spotty tree canopy. This is why the City of Portland and Urban Forestry have given our neighborhood priority tree selection. Learn more about the program and sign up at portland.gov/treepartners.
We’ll also be tabling at events. Sunday, September 13 come say hello 12–4 pm at Tabor Day hosted by Friends of Mt. Tabor Park. Pick up some STNA postcards to share with neighbors, order a South Tabor t-shirt and grab a copy of the latest South Tabor Crow newsletter.
Speaking of the Crow, we just published our 10th quarterly edition online! And for the first time in many years, we’re printing and distributing some as well.
